Helping students take a story from idea to publication.
The Florida Student News Watch is a student journalism program that gives college-aged students an opportunity to dig into the principles of journalism, while mentored by a professional journalist. Previous journalism experience is not required for students to participate.
CD Davidson-Hiers, then a K12 education reporter at the Tallahassee Democrat, began an informal version of this program in January 2020.
A grant from the Society of Professional Journalists - Florida the following year turned this informal program into the Florida Student News Watch, and students were paid for their published work.
The Florida Student News Watch is committed to empowering students’ voices, emboldening confidence in their abilities as writers and reporters, and broadening the scope of students’ understanding of what journalism, done well, can accomplish.
